The iconic Ballard Bridge provides epic views of the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges. But it’s summer now, which means that 6:00 PM brings the most wretched of waits while a long queue of sailboats make their way out to sea. The bridge manufactures a love/hate relationship with its transient travelers. Now, the span over Lake Washington Ship Canal and Salmon Bay faces change.
Yesterday, I noticed that an RFQ was posted seeking a construction team for work on the Ballard Bridge. Could the City of Seattle be raising the bridge, ending the mind-numbing waits that accompany boat traffic? Keep dreaming. But, the City is investing between $7-9 Million of Bridging the Gap funds (a $365 Million levy) to finance a seismic retrofit.
In short, the city’s Department of Transportation is seeking a construction manager (CM) for a series of tasks, including column jacketing, concrete and steel strengthening and replacement of lighting. The bid solicitation can be found over at eBid eXchange.
Bids are due by July 21, 2011. The CM’s duties require project inspection, contract administration, document control and other related services. Environmental impact will be very important, since the project is above a waterway.
Best of luck to those of you bidding!
